Objectives Contraception choices affect the
long term sexual health and fertility of women. Contraceptive choice may change
according to different populations.
Design and methods This study was carried
out to determine the contraceptive prevalance among 9835 woman attending to our
hospital’s Family Planning Center for contraceptive methods and counseling.
Results The age group was between 14-54 ages. Contraceptive usage was as
follows : with Intrauterine device (IUD) being highest used contraceptives
methods 57.2%, Hormonal contraceptives are the second 22.9 % with (oral
contraceptives 18.8%, injectable methods 3.2%, subdermal implants 0.9%), condoms
followed with 19.9%. The rate of abortion for unintended pregnancies was 13.6%.
Conclusions Couples educations, work status and couples etnicity are important
predictors in contraceptive choice. Studies showed that withdrawal is the main
method used amongst couples in Turkey to prevent pregnancy. As our study group
included the couples desiring methods other than withdrawal, the intrauterine
system is the most preferred method in our group. The reasons for this is IUD’s
insert and forget way of usage. Condoms are the third preferred method after
IUD and hormonal methods in our population(19.9%) Legal abortion rates for
unintended pregnancy was 13% similar with the European countries. Our clinical
results reflect the general choices of our population because our center is one
of the first applied family planning center in our city.
