Assessment of knowledge of male students of Kashan universities
about sexual transmitted disease (STD)

Background With respect to the increase of STD during recent years in Iran
and role of knowledge in preventing of this disease , this study was conducted
on level of knowledge about STD in male students of universities in Kashan 2005.
Material and methods For this descriptive -crossectional study,
335 male Azad
and Kashan universities students (except medical sciences university ), were
randomly selected. Students completed questionnaires and variables such as
knowledge about method of transmission, age of prevalence, side effects,
treatment and prevention were recorded and analyzed statistically.
Results A total of 174
students (52%) were from Kashan university and 168 (48%) from Azad university.
Six percent of our cases had good knowledge, 59% medium level of knowledge and
35% poor knowledge. Forty-three percent had acceptable knowledge about side effects of STD; 134 students
(40%) had information about condom as a preventing factor in STD and 111
students (33%) expressed that STD is more common in women than men.
Conclusion We
need an emergency teaching about STD (signs, symptoms, prevention, diagnosis
and treatment) in young people.
