Objective
Evaluation of contraceptive care given in 2005 in the city center of Van and
comparison of this rate with 1998–2000 and 2002.
Method Contraceptive care
given in 2005 in the city center of Van was analyzed retrospectively and this
data was compared with the data of 1998–2000 and 2002.
Results Contraceptive
care was given to total of 21,809 people by these institutions. It is determined
that condom was given to 10,572 cases (48.48%), IUD was given to 4273 (19.59%)
cases, oral contraceptive method was given to 4485 (20.56%) cases and monthly
injectable contraceptive method was given to 1608 cases (7.37%). Curettage
procedure was performed on 127 cases (0.58%), but it is expected that more than
this number was performed at private clinics. Tubal ligation was performed on
696 (3.19%) cases and implanon was given to 48 cases (0.22%).
If comparison
about contraceptive care rate between 1998 and 2000 was done, an increase of
14.87% (2535/2912) in total care rate and an increase of 271% (221/820), 11.09%
(946/1051) and 35.02% (237/320) in preservative, IUD and tubal ligation rates,
respectively, were seen. And a decrease in oral contraceptive, injectable
contraception and curettage rates were found with these rates being 32.75%
(461/310), 44.7% (456/252) and 3.63% (165/159), respectively.
The comparison of
contraceptive care data between 2000 and 2002 years were; an increase of 153%
(2912/ 7389) in total care rate and an increase of 321% (8201/ 3457), 65%
(1051/1742) and 84% (320/589) in preservative, IUD and tubal ligation rates,
respectively, were detected. An increase in oral contraception and injectable
contraception rates were found and the rates were 244% (310/1069), 92% (252/
486), respectively. A decrease in curettage procedure with the rate being 71%
(159/46) was seen.
The comparison of contraceptive care data between 2002 and
2005 years were; an increase of 195% (7389/ 21809) in total care rate and an
increase of 205% (3457/10572), 145% (1742/4273) and 18% (589/696) in
preservative, IUD and tubal ligation rates, respectively, were found. An
increase of 319% (1069/4485), 208% (486/1608) and 176% (46/127) in oral
contraceptives, injectable contraception and curettage rates, respectively, were
found.
Conclusion An increase in the rates of Tubal ligation, IUD and oral
contraceptives in Van region were found positive but deficient because of high
Grand multiparity rate. We believe that patients should be informed about more
safe methods and tubal ligation should be encouraged especially in grand
multiparity.
