11th ESC Congress

The Organising and Scientific Committee invite all those

involved in any aspect of contraception, sexual and reproductive health

care to actively participate by submitting abstracts, either for oral or

poster presentation. All abstracts will be peer reviewed and those

accepted will be published in a Supplement of the European Journal of

Contraception and Reproductive Health Care. As only a limited number of

oral communications can be accepted, authors are asked to indicate on

their form whether they wish their abstract to be considered ONLY for oral

or poster presentation or for either option.

Oral Communications

The best oral communication abstracts will be selected for

presentation either in the free communication sessions or integrated in a

congress session. Authors will need to indicate their preference for an

oral presentation on the online form. Instructions for oral communications

will be given at the time of notification of acceptance.

Young Scientist

Session

A Young Scientist session will provide a special platform

for oral presentations by young scientists (below 35 years of age). Each

presenter in this session will compete for the ESC Young Scientist Award.

Abstracts submitted for the Young Scientist session should be written and

presented by a first author who is less than 35 years old on 19 May 2010.

Authors, who wish to be included in this session, should indicate this on

the online form.

Poster presentations

Poster presentations will carry equivalent scientific

status to oral communications in the programme. Instructions for poster

preparation and display will be given at the time of notification of

acceptance. A selection of the best posters will be presented in the ‘Best

Poster’ session. From this session, the candidate for the Best Poster

Award will be chosen. Authors need to indicate on their form whether they

wish to be considered for this session and should prepare two slides in

case they are selected to present their work. To be considered for this

award, posters will need to be in place for judging by 10:00 am on

Thursday May 20. The Congress participants will be given an opportunity to

vote for what they consider to be the best ‘Public’ poster award.

Awards

The Best Poster Award, the Best Free Communication Award,

the Young Scientist Award and the Public Poster Award will be awarded

during the Closing Ceremony on Saturday.

topic from the aforementioned list which best describes the content of the

submitted abstract.

Procedure and general

policy

• Original scientific material is welcome and should not have been

  previously published. Abstracts presented at local, regional or

  national meetings may be submitted.

• Abstracts must reach the online system not later than 5 January 2010. Receipt of the abstract will be confirmed.
• Any person submitting an abstract can only be the first author for

  two abstracts.

• Authors will need to indicate their preference on the online form:

  oral communication only, poster only, either oral or poster.

• Authors who wish their abstract to be considered for the

  best free communication or best poster award or/and for presentation during the Young

  Scientist session, should indicate this on the online submission form.

• Abstracts will be peer reviewed (blind) by at least two referees.
• Confirmation of acceptance or rejection by the Scientific Committee

  will be mailed to the corresponding author. Detailed practical

  information regarding the presentation, will be included in the

  confirmation.

• Accepted abstracts will be published in the Book of Abstracts of the

  Congress, Supplement of the European Journal of Contraception and

  Reproductive Health Care.

• Presenting authors, whose abstracts are accepted for presentation,

  must register for the congress and pay the (early) registration fee.

  In case of ‘no show’ at the time of the congress, the author may be

  blacklisted for the next congress.

How to submit an

abstract?

1. Abstracts can only

   be submitted electronically through the online system on www.contraception-esc.com/thehague.htm 

   (Call for abstracts) – “Click here to submit an abstract”.

   Hard copy abstracts (sent by

   fax, email or post) will not be considered.

2. As a first step, you need to register as a first time user. The system

   will ask you to enter your name and contact details and to create a

   personal password. 

3. Log in to the submission system. To log in, enter your email address and the

   password you chose when you first registered with the system (see 2).

4. When you click the “log in” button you will be taken to a

   screen from which the submission process starts. Please read the

   instructions on this screen carefully. If you have not yet submitted an

   abstract to the system you should click the link that says “Click

   here to submit a new abstract“.

5. Should you want to submit several abstracts, you have to login each

   time you want to submit an abstract.

6. Please contact the administrator by email ([email protected])

   if you have any problems with this process.

Typing

and other instructions

1. Abstracts must be written in English (English, not

   American spelling).

2. Use Arial font, size 10.
3. The abstract must fit

   into the abstract frame.

4. Type the title of the abstract in bold and sentence case (no capitals!) in the first textbox.
5. Do not enter names

   of authors or affiliations in the abstract template as your abstract needs

   to remain unidentified (blinded) to the reviewers. As you will need to

   enter this information elsewhere online, the system will make the correct

   link between your name etc. and your abstract.

6. Preferably do not include references.
7. The text of the abstract should briefly state: 

1. Objective(s): indicate the purpose of the study or the hypothesis that was

   tested.

2. Design & Methods: include the setting for the study, the

   subjects (number and type), the diagnosis or intervention, and statistical

   analysis.

3. Results: present as clearly as possible the outcome of the

   study and statistical significance if appropriate.

4. Conclusions: briefly

   discuss the data and emphasise the significance of the results.

8. Type

   the text of the abstract single-spaced with no indentations, using the

   full width of the document.

9. Avoid the use of symbols.
10. Standard

    abbreviations are accepted in the text. Unusual ones should be in brackets

    after the word first appears. Do not use abbreviations in the title.

11. Please ensure that your abstract does not contain any errors in spelling,

    grammar or scientific facts as it will be reproduced exactly as you type

    it.

12. You will be asked to declare any conflict of interest.
