Design The aims
of this study were to investigate characteristic of users, effects of implant
and rates of premature removal of implant.
Methods A retrospective study of the
single-rod contraceptive implant, Implanon® (NV Organon, Oss, The Netherlands),
was carried out in Ataturk Education and Research Hospital in 148 women between
January 2002- December 2005. Assessments included age, body mass index, weight
gain, duration of use, bleeding pattern, side effects, parity, cause of removal
and subjective acceptability.
Results The rate of side-effects with the
single-rod implant was 35%. The side effects were more frequent in women under
35 years old (p:0,032). Side effects leading to discontinuation were mainly
bleeding disturbances (50%) including infrequent bleeding (17,6%), amenorrhea
(16,9%) and menometrorrhagia (frequent and heavy bleeding) (15,5 %). The implant
was prematurely removed from 30% of users and the most frequent reason for
removal was side-effects (82%).
Conclusions The results of this study showed us
that the side effects were more frequent in women below 35 years old and early
discontinuation of implant use were mainly due to bleeding problems .
