The dislocation of iuds (intrauterine devices): analysis of 11
cases

Objective In this study,evaluation of the patients that underwent an operation
for IUD dislocation is aimed.
Material and method The files of the patients that
referred to Obstetric and Gynecologic Clinic of Yüzüncü Yil University
Medical Faculty between January 1995 and December 2005 for IUD dislocation were
researched retrospectively.Sociodemographic features,diagnostic and treatment
methods of the patients were established.
Results Ten of the totally 11 patients
underwent operation for IUD retention.In 4 cases; IUD was embedded into
endometrial cavity and curettage procedure was performed in one case for
pregnancy and IUD retention at an external center.Uterine perforation was seen
in 4 cases and bowel perforation was seen together with uterine perforation in
two of these 4 cases.IUD was embedded into sacrouterine ligament in one case of
two patients with uterine perforation and into posterior servix in the other
case.One case underwent total abdominal hysterectomy for myomatozis uteri and
IUD was seen embedded into myometrial tissue.Bicornate unicollis uterus was seen
during cesarean operation in one pregnant case with IUD; and IUD was detected in
the other cavity.In the last case,IUD was seen embedded into 10th cm of rectal
mucosa.IUD was removed with hysterescopy in 4 cases; with laparatomy in 4 cases;
with laparascopy in one case; with colpotomy through vagina in one case and with
rectosigmoidoscopy in one case.After these operations; complication was not seen
in any patient.
Conclusion The dislocation of IUD is seen rarely but causes
serious complications.In IUD dislocations, uterine and other organ perforations
must be recurred to the mind.
