Objective This research has been made to

examine the female health personnel’s view on female sterilization (FS) and male

sterilization (MS).

Design and methods The female personnel working in Health

Center, Ordu Birth and Children’s Hospital, Ordu State Hospital made up the

sample of this descriptive research. It was planned to cover all the personnel

by not making any elimination for sample, however the research was held on with

150 female health personnel accepting to take part in the research. Official

permission was taken from the institution where the research was made. The

research was made between 09.12.2005 and 25.12.2005. The data were collected

with the questionnaire form. The questionnaires were given to the participants

and they were wanted to fill the form by themselves. The analysis of the data

was made with frequency distribution, percentage and arithmetic average in SPSS

11.5 statistic computer program.

Results It was determined that as

contraceptive method 30,2% of them use condom, 26,4% of them use intrauterine

device, 10,1% of them use It was determined that 76,9% of the health personnel

who have FS got the decision of FS with their husbands, 84,6% of them had the FS

made during cesarean, 92,3% of them prefer the method because it is certain and

reliable, 84,6% of them are not regretful after the FS. The reasons of not

preferring FS are that it is hard to give up the method (29,3%), they are

satisfied with the current used contraceptive technique(24%), and they think it

is unacceptable for religious beliefs (2%). 76,1% of female health personnel do

not want their husbands to have MS made. While the reasons of female health

personnel to want their husbands to have MS made are those such as they want

their husbands to take part in family planning and the easiness of the operation,

the reasons of not to want vasectomy are those such as being satisfied with the

current used contraceptive method, husbands’ not accepting vasectomy,

possibility of having a baby again.

Conclusion It was determined that most of

the health personnel do not prefer FS and MS. It was determined that the

participant who use the FS as a contraceptive technique have it during the

cesarean operation, prefer it because it is certain and reliable, and are not

regretful of using the technique.
