Objective This research has been made to examine the male

health personnel’s view on female sterilization (FS) and male sterilization.

Design and methods The male personnel working in Health Center, Ordu Birth and

Children’s Hospital, Ordu State Hospital made up the sample of this descriptive

research. There has not been elimination among the samples and the research has

been held on with fifty male health personnel accepting to take part in the

research. Before starting the research necessary permissions have been taken

from authorized associations. The research was made between 09.12.2005 and

25.12.2005. The data were collected with a questionnaire form prepared according

to the literature. The analysis of the data was made with frequency distribution,

percentage and arithmetic average in SPSS 11.5 statistic computer program.

Results As contraceptive method, 25% of participants use intrauterine device,

22,5% of them use condoms, 7,5% of them use withdrawal, and 5% of them use

female sterilization. Male health personnel do not prefer vasectomy because 36%

of them are satisfied with the current used technique, 22% of them think giving

up (FS) is hard, 6% of them think it unacceptable for religious beliefs, 4% of

them think it as a loose of sexual virility, and 4% of their wives do not desire

it. 78,6% of the participants do not want their wives to use as a contraceptive

method. Male personnel do not prefer FS even because of the desire of having a

baby again and their wives being in menopause.

Conclusions It was determined

that with a high rate the male health personnel do not want tube ligation and

vasectomy as a contraceptive method. Even the health personnel who will inform

the public have doubts about those two methods. Necessary enterprises should be

planned in family planning counseling services by taking into consideration of

this situation.
